Paper Certificate of Titles will no longer be issued

Published On: July 5, 2024

The Victorian Land Registry has run out of paper (kind of).

From 3 August 2024 the Victorian Land Registry will no longer issue paper certificates of title. Moving forward, all certificates of title will be held and issued electronically.

What does this mean for you?

You do not need to take any action as a result of this change, regardless of the current form of your certificate of title.

Existing paper certificates of title will remain valid until they are next dealt with by the Victorian Land Registry, for example if you sell the property. Existing paper certificates of title should continue to be kept in a safe place.

Upon the next transaction, the paper of certificate of title will be converted into an electronic certificate of title. Depending on who manages the transaction on your behalf, the electronic certificate of title may be held by:

  1. Your bank or mortgagee; or
  2. Lawyer or conveyancer; or
  3. The Registrar of Titles.
