Domestic Building Insurance Claims – Victorian Ombudsman – Media Release
The Victorian Ombudsman announced, on 16 September 2024, that it has initiated an investigation into how the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) has managed Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) claims. This investigation comes in response to a referral from Parliament and follows complaints about the VMIA, particularly in the wake of the Porter Davis collapse, which affected approximately 1,500 Victorians with partially built homes.
The investigation will examine potential systemic issues and concerns with VMIA’s claims management practices, including whether these practices are fair and reasonable in light of the VMIA’s policies and procedures and the relevant legislation. Recommendations for improvements may be made based on the Ombudsman’s findings.
If you have been affected by VMIA’s management of DBI claims and wish to contribute to this investigation, we encourage you to make a submission to the Ombudsman:
1. Submission period: 16 September 2024 to 11 October 20242.
2. How to submit:
- Online form
- Phone: 9613 6230 (open 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday). You can also leave a message to call you back at a suitable time.
If you have previously made a complaint to the ombudsman about VMIA’s handling of your DBI claim, that information will be automatically considered in this investigation and you do not need to submit another complaint.
We will continue to monitor this investigation closely and provide updates as they become available. Should you need any assistance about making your DBI claim or complaint to the ombudsman, please feel free to contact our experienced litigation or property team.
